The first thing to remember is to not panic. This story's main idea arrived to me in a very nebulous form; I only had a vague idea I wanted to explore, coupled with an interesting image that had no connection. I was interested in writing a story that united the two things. It felt sort of like the Euclidean rule that any two points can be connected in a line, and any three points can exist on the same geometric plane. I needed to find the right third point to connect these two things into the plane of a story. For a long time, though, while I started writing the story, I only had the two things, and that only makes a line, a direct sequence of this-then-this. A story has to have more dimensions than that! So I was stumped.
After the jump: breathing life into the story.
