Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost

Phew! If you love epic poems told in Homeric style and seventh-century style language chronicling the original war in heaven and the Fall of Adam and Eve, then this is the book for you. Though I don't normally care for poetry, this epic poem by John Milton captivated me. It takes patience to read, though. The cover picture is a very old painting of Satan. There are a few interesting things about him: first, he is an angel, which many people often forget, and was once the best and brightest of all angels; he is terrifyingly beautiful here. Second: Satan has been portrayed as either asexual or female, clearly, because certain *cough* elements are lacking. Of course, poor villified Eve is usually portrayed as the embodiment of sin, so it is interesting to picture Satan as the female seductress. Third: note the attention to detail. In the folds of Satan's wings are dozens of tiny pictures of people, generally doing lurid and sinful acts. See also that Satan is holding a piece of fruit in his hand, offering it innocently to whomever will take it.
